After years of participating in dirt circuit races, Rochelle Bown, 14, is ready for bigger challenges.
From March 19 to 23, she will compete in Speed Week – Lake Gairdner in the outback for the first time.
She shares her passion with her father, Nick Bown, who is working on a Subaru WRX especially for the occasion.
“About 15 years ago, my mate Christian Roberts and I heard about this competition and we decided to give it a go,” Mr Bown said.
“The passion for the cars and the races only grew from there.”
Land speed racing is one of the earliest and purest forms of motor sport. Many of the vehicles are specifically designed and built for land speed racing and Rochelle’s will be no different.
“I have been working on her car for a month now,” Mr Bown said.
“The work is pretty much done. We have used bits and pieces of many other cars to build it and now it would be worth $5000.
“I decided to build that specific car for her because it is very safe, as it is an all-wheel-drive car.
“This is a good hobby for the youngsters because they learn how to drive and to handle cars well.
“It is exciting to be working on my daughter’s car, but I suppose she is more nervous than I am.”
Rochelle is excited and said she loves competing but that her father is the most competitive of them.
“My dad wanted to work on this car for me which was really cool,” she said. “I have been competing in dirt circuit racing for four years in a car that my dad built for me as well, and I love competitions.
“Racing other people is the best thing about it.”
The event has attracted competitors from around Australia, the United States, New Zealand and the United Kingdom ... and now our very own Rochelle.
