Pretty, protected flowers find safety in numbers

13/11/2008 11:45:00 AM
Port Pirie Garden Club members enjoyed a presentation by guest speaker Dennis Trevorrow.

Mr Trevorrow and his wife Anthea, of Salisbury, are avid growers of streptocarpus, of which there are 1400 species.

These pretty flowers are related to the African Violet and Gloxinia family and have similar cultural requirements. Few of the original species are seen outside of special glasshouses.

There are many improved hybrids in shades of mauve, magenta, pink, white and blue.

Streptocarpus are commonly known as Cape Primrose. They make useful indoor decorations. Several members took up the challenge and purchased a plant from Mr. Trevorrow.

They make impressive specimen plants, as shown in the presentation. President Ann Mat-hews welcomed new member Joe van der Lee to the club.

Competitions this month were Bloom of the Month, won by June Jonker with a very delicate, but beautiful epiphyllum, also known as an Orchid Cactus, in iridescent shades of magenta and white.

Equal second were Gwen Jacobs, with a pink alstroemeria and Pat Coomblas’ lovely begonia flower. Anne Trevorrow’s magnolia gained third place.

Entries to take out top points for An Arrangement of Succ-ulents in a pot or bowl not exceeding 20 cm were Anne Trevorrow first, Beryl McGree second, and tied for third were Val Parker and Pat Coomblas. The club will go into recess after the Christmas party in December with no meeting until February next year. The evening ended with the auction of plants and cuttings fruit.

This is always a popular part of the meeting as auctioneer Kevin Cattermole tries to sell all the donated goods.
