There is always a time in life when you accidentally stumble across a true treasure.
This is exactly what happened to local man Craig Manners.
During a car pick-up in Jamestown, he was asking around about old classics and literally plucked the rabbit from the hat.
He managed to contact an old farmer from the region who had an “old car” in the shed.
Mr Manners returned to Port Pirie with no expectations of hearing any more from the farmer and was quite surprised to receive a call back the very next day, asking if he would like to come view the vehicle.
On arrival at the farm Craig discovered an original 1968 HK Monaro that had been hidden away for many years.
The farmer had used the Monaro as his family car so it has done some miles.
The HK still has its original coat of Marlin Turquoise, runs a 186 red motor and three-on-the-tree column shift. It has all its trim and badges, some beautiful chrome work and the interior is in great condition for a vehicle of its age.
Craig has had the car for five years now and said he joined Pirie and Districts Automotive Restorers Club last year.
He plans to restore the coupe for club events, driving and showing, but it will be kept fully original.
“My two children are just getting into motorbikes and are becoming rev-heads so this car will be the one that stays in the
family,” he said.
The model was released in 1968 as a two-door pillarless hardtop coupe offering customers three models to choose from in varied colours and either a six or eight- cylinder motor. It may be some time before we see this blast from Holden history cruising the streets, but the wait should be worth it.
