The Rotary Club of Port Pirie, with the support of 100 volunteers, has packed another trailer with knitted goods.
The special delivery will end up in the hands of thousands of poor families around the world.
“While I was chairman of the club’s community committee in 2008, past president Brian Richards suggested a project to coordinate knitted goods to go to Africa,” said Rotarian Peter Baur.
“I took this to the next meeting, where past president Bob Ward volunteered to coordinate the project, which he does up to this day, even after leaving the club last year.
“The original outlet for these items was overwhelmed by the amount of goods being donated so we were asked to send the items to Mission World Aid.
“They sent the items around the world, not just Africa, so the initial name of the project ‘Knitting for Africa’ became a little misleading,” said Mr Baur.
There are several collection points arranged by Rotarians of various clubs throughout South Australia.
“We have more than 100 people knitting for us. We have so far delivered 18 trailer loads with another load packed and waiting for transport,” Mr Baur said.
Mr Ward stored and packed knitted goods in his shed at home while Mr Baur did the same at his place of employment until he retired. Then he transported the items by trailer to the Mission World Aid depot at Stirling in the Adelaide Hills.
“Due to my retirement and mouse problems at Mr Ward’s shed we decided to buy a 40-foot container which we situated next to the Rotary Shed at the Port Pirie Airport for the storage and packing of knitted items,” Mr Baur said.
