A career as a police officer is Kandeana Steele’s dream.
The 17-year-old has just gained the first indigenous traineeship at the Port Pirie Police Station.
Born in Adelaide, she has lived in Port Pirie for the past four years during which time she attended John Pirie Secondary School.
Throughout Year 11 and 12 she has been in the SA Aboriginal Sports Training Academy which is a centre of excellence for indigenous sports and learning.
Since starting the traineeship she has been given support to continue to finish SACE units of work.
Teacher and academy officer Matt Gale praised the teenager.
A member of the girls nine-a-side team, she will play in the Power Cup in August. As part of the leadership work, she designed the guernsey.
The talented sportswoman plays netball for the A grade Sollies team and in her second year in A grade she has consolidated her position in the team.
The confident young woman has completed a month of the traineeship and said she is really enjoying it.
“They have made me feel welcome,” she said.
She praised her mother Cindy Steele who she said was a tremendous help in her application for the traineeship.
“Mum is very proud of me,” she said.
