Island's dilemma

Port Flinders or Weeroona Island?

A sign put beside the highway advises drivers to turn left to Weeroona Island and two signs, almost side-by-side, refer to the place as either Port Flinders or Weeroona Island.

What you see is a place with an identity crisis.

It is confusing for someone who is not a local to know where they are heading to and the place could be missing out on tourists because of that.

For many years it has been known as Weeroona Island, but there is a renewed push to see it called Port Flinders.

“Port Flinders is the official name approved by council,” said Elaine Fowler, secretary of the Port Flinders Development Association.

“We are getting a sign reading ‘Welcome to Port Flinders’ in a good location so people know where they are. At this stage, with different signs, it is misleading to tourists.

“The only problem is that many of the other signs we had were stolen or vandalised. We have to constantly clean and fix them up, which is what we will keep doing if we have to.”

According to the association, it could be a while until they have the welcome sign up.

“We are following the proper steps through council to get it done which includes a consultation in town on where it should be placed,” Mrs Fowler said.

“Our association was fortunate enough to have 316 stainless steel letters donated to be used for the welcome wall.”

But according to the Weeroona Island Association, the official name of the town is still to be decided.

“The community has the democratic option to have a say on what the place is called,” said resident Den Kennedy.

“This has been causing all sorts of confusion and we are missing out on tourists.

“Mount Remarkable District Council promised in 2010 that there would be a survey with the community on what the name should be.

“This has not happened it, so I don’t see how a welcome sign can be put up before that is decided”.

I dont see why it would be called Port Flinders; most people outside this area know it as Weerona Island and if you go to google maps you find Weerona Island, not Port Flinders island.

I grew up in Pirie, leaving in the early 80's. When I was there, there was no port facility at the Island. I would consider that to be more confusing to tourists than having 2 names, or for that matter, being an island that was only surrounded by water during king tides. Does a beached barge on the southern side of the island count as being port facilities, or does the small 20 foot wide channel on the western side count?
