Gloves on for clean-up day

13 Mar, 2010 01:18 PM
Students from Solomontown Primary School headed out of the classrooms armed with rubber gloves and rubbish bags on Friday to do their bit for Clean Up Australia Day.

School captains Katelin Scarman and Daniel Fidge said they had been learning about the impacts of littering in preparation for the day.

“We have learned about ways to keep a safe

environment,” Katelin said.

Daniel said: “We talked about how one paper per person can really help.”

They headed down to the beach with Year 6 and 7 students to pick up glass and rubbish.

The Year 4 and 5 students headed to Globe Oval and Princes Park to clean up while the younger students made sure the school was tidy. Students used tongs to pick up broken glass.

Assistant principal Damien Mellow said the children had filled 15 bags.

Council pitched in by collecting the rubbish at the end of the day.

The 20th anniversary of Clean Up Australia Day was scheduled to be on Sunday.
