Friendly speed camera won't hit the wallet

Friendly speed camera won't hit the wallet

A new self-monitoring speed-limit machine in Port Pirie is helping motorists to control their speed.

The device, provided by the local road safety branch, has been in use on Main Road for about a week.

Police operations manager Senior Sergeant Gerry Nicholson said the machine was there purely and simply to help drivers watch their speed limit on a particular stretch of road.

“Sometimes people can get a bit complacent when they are driving the same stretch of road all the time,” he said.

He said the device was not there to book people for speeding.

“It is not designed to catch people, it is designed to inform people,” he said.

The monitoring device has been used on both sides of Main Road, near the police station, with many drivers slowing when they approach it.

It is a welcome addition to the road safety message.
