Fresh hopes of iron ore exports from Pirie after company strikes outback deal

25 Jan, 2012 02:27 PM
Fresh hopes have been raised that iron ore could be exported from our harbour.

WPG Resources says it is back in the iron ore market in South Australia and strongly implied it could use our port for exports.

This comes as the company announced they had signed an agreement with Maosen Australia for its iron ore assets at Giffen Well in the outback. Executive chairman Bob Duffin told an investment news site that the iron ore products from the mine could be exported from our town.

“Our port assets at Port Pirie, which were not sold to OneSteel, can be easily used for the export of iron ore products from Giffen Well,” he said.

“ We do not need someone else to build a port.”

Giffen Well is 140 kilometres from Coober Pedy near the Stuart Highway.

In its stock exchange announcement, the company emphasised that the site is just 25 kilometres from the Carnes siding on the central Australian railway line, with “direct rail access to WPG’s port facilities in Port Pirie”. The company plans to start drilling at the site as the basis for a preliminary feasibility study.

The company already has development approval from the State Government for an iron ore export project here.

This is exciting news in a well-written article. Congratulations. I live in Bunbury WA and our local papers do not write articles as well understood. This is great news for the economy of Port Pirie as well. It is a go-ahead area now after a long time stagnating. The economy will expand as it has over here. Hopefully the infrastructure of the social services will serve the community well.
