It is not often we have sweets for breakfast, but on Tuesday groups of children sat around tables with big grins and sticky faces as they ate pancakes covered in syrup and sugar.
The Port Pirie Childcare Centre made pancakes for breakfast in honour of Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Day.
Loud and enthusiastic eating was the positive response to this idea.
Cook Hazel Vette decided to hold the day to involve the children as she believes it is a way of including them in the community.
The children ate quickly – some with spoons while others more impatient to finish
disregarded the cutlery.
Child support assistants Tammy Jarrad and Jess Meschiati were on hand to help team leader Cassandra Jasper keep everything under control.
Mrs Vette said the childcare centre “also recognises other important dates, such as Harmony Day and Daffodil Day, but at the moment, I am up to my ears in pancakes”.
Ms Jasper encourages the children to participate as a form of learning.
Pancake Day is traditionally held the day before the start of Lent, as it was from then in Biblical times that certain foods were forbidden to the people.
But for the children it is just another day – only this one has a sweet twist.
