Michaela takes first step towards media career

21 Nov, 2011 04:14 PM
Michaela Boitano has been named this year’s winner of the Greg Mayfield Journalist Award.

The Recorder’s managing-editor presents the annual prize to the John Pirie Secondary School student who is most likely to succeed in journalism.

Michaela, who attended Year 12, wrote two stories in class that have been published in the newspaper in recent months.

"It felt so good. I was so proud," she said of the moment she saw her name in print.

"I got my first one framed and I have it at home."

One report was about the Building The Education Revolution projects in Port Pirie and the other was about the mayoral chair.

She said she loved her experience of journalism so much that she listed it as her first preference for university study.

"It was just nice to go around and interview people and fun to get out of the classroom," she said.

She has always been a standout English student and she said that if she could not study journalism she would become a teacher.

Mr Mayfield said Michaela had shown an aptitude for journalism in her articles that were published.

"In particular, a great amount of research was involved in the building projects report," he said.

"It was very well done. This student also ‘brought alive’ the history of the city’s mayoral chair. Good luck, Michaela."
