Car hits home after criminal night out

11 Jan, 2012 03:33 PM
An evening that began with a car crashing into a house ended with its driver being arrested for imprisoning a woman and possessing drugs and guns.

Peacefully relaxing in his lounge chair on Monday night, Bill Robertson was only metres away from the spot where the car hit his house.

“I was watching television and all of a sudden, bang,” he said.

“No one was hurt. It was close.”

It narrowly missed a window, a lucky twist of fate that Mr Robertson believes saved him from being “mince meat”.

Quickly responding from the shock, he got out of his chair, inspected the damage and then went to the front of his house, only to find that the vehicle had driven away.

He described the shock of the noise, despite being “half deaf” and wearing ear muffs. “You can only imagine how loud it was,” he said.

Police were called to his home on Agett Place at about 11.15pm after reports that a vehicle had allegedly done a burn out, lost control and driven into the front of a house.

They located a substantially damaged Commodore sedan a short distance away.

The alleged driver, a 38-year-old Port Pirie man, has been arrested for aggravated driving without due care and drink driving after allegedly recording a blood alcohol level of 0.178.

Further police investigations revealed that the arrested man allegedly imprisoned a woman at his home address earlier in the evening.

She managed to escape and reported the incident to police while the man was being charged with the driving offences.

She did not sustain any physical injuries.

A search of the alleged driver’s house revealed cannabis plants, firearms and ammunition.

Charges of unlawful detention, possessing prescribed equipment, and firearms and ammunition offences were later added to the list the man will face.

He was granted bail and will appear in the Port Pirie Magistrates Court February 6.

Mr Anderson, a lawn bowler, said he was surprised that he survived the incident.

“I am going to get a lotto ticket,” he said.

“If it had come through the window there would have been no more bowls for Billy.”
