Cobi Rontaunay’s Mum Nicole Wiskar sums up their trip to the 2009 Northern Territory Dirt Kart Titles in Alice Springs as “a wicked weekend, with wicked driving and a wicked trophy”.
And a grinning Cobi is proud of his efforts, competing for the first time out of the State and brining home the Northern Territory title in the Junior Heavy Go- Kart Class.
Competing at the Arunga Park Speedway on July 18 and 19, Cobi had travelled with his Mum and Dad, Michael Rontaunay.
Over the two days Cobi, who has been driving for two years and is in his first year of competition, raced in eight races.
The young speedster had an overall total of three thirds, two seconds and two firsts with a blinder in the last lap of the final race knocking five seconds off the track record.
“It was a really good weekend, even though the track was a little rough,” Cobi said.
And if Cobi and his family can’t be found at the local club’s monthly meet then they travel through out the State competing, with a recent first placing at a Morgan club meet.
“It is an excellent experience with a great family atmosphere. We get to combine go-karts with a holiday, and good company,” Mr Rontaunay said.
Overall, the event was well supported by the go-kart club with seven competitors travelling to Alice Springs to enjoy the weekend’s program.
Among them from juniors to seniors, were Rob Marks, Nathan Marks, Matt Degan, Dale Afford, Ryan Afford, Peter Cates and Lachie Cates.
Local boy Ryan Afford raced well in all of the eight races and finished fourth in the Junior Heavy Class.
The Port Pirie Go-Kart Club meets once a month at the track off Port Germain Road and welcomes anyone interested in the sport to “come and have a hack around the track, no equipment needed”.
As for Cobi his next big meeting will be on Kangaroo Island in late September for the South Australian Titles and then on to the big one at Lucindale for the Australian Titles.
