The anticipated 2007 Wombat Rally is on once again, this weekend from Friday to Sunday, August 17, 18 and 19.
Flinders Touring Motorcycle Association (FTMA) members host the annual event, which attracts motorcycle enthusiasts and their families to Warnertown from ne-ar and far, while raising some money for charity.
Association president, Mick Cliff, said the event was fully licensed and catered for, and he encouraged the general public to the event.
“It is a family-orientated event full of bikes, events and fun entertainment,” he said.
Continuing the tradition of donating the weekend’s gate-takings to the charity Angel Flight, Mr Cliff said “It is something we are proud to be able to do.”
Events are set to include a Show’N’shine, gym-khana, a form of soccer, roll-the-barrel, a burn-out competition and a slow race, all expected to be crowd pleasers.
Day entry is by gold-coin donation at the gate while the $15 rally fee includes acc-ess to well sheltered camping grounds, shower amenities, and a breakfast cook-up.
Committee members Des Will and John Stenson rolled into The Recorder on two very different motorcycles to chat about the rally on Tuesday.
Though worth the same monetary value it was not easy for an untrained eye to pick the was more than 30 years age difference between the bikes.
Mr Stenson exp-lained that the 1976 Yamaha Z900 bike that he lovingly restored was considered the fastest bike in the world in its day.
But Mr Will pointed out the difference 30 years can make.
The power difference of the newer 2007 Suzuki Boulevard at 1800cc is double that of the Z900. Both machines will be two of more than 20 motorbikes on display, and will certainly be well worth a look, during the rally. Mr Will, who is also talented in the music department, said he and Port Broughton entertainer Colin Curly would perform.
“I really encourage anyone thinking of coming along to do so,” he said. “It is a great weekend the club puts on and gives back to the community.” To find out more contact FTMA president Mick Cliff on 86330654.
