The Risdon Grove Urban Rejuvenation Project is completed after 10 years.
The people friendly housing project met customer needs and preferences along with building new and affordable homes with features that make it accessible and adaptable to the needs of people in all stages of life.
It transformed an aging suburb into a vibrant new community.
The project was a huge initiative by the formerly named Housing Trust of South Australia, now known as Housing SA. It was formally culminated in a ceremony at Threadgold Park, with about 100 residents and supporters attending.
Housing SA Port Pirie regional manager Liz Malcolm said: “For me, it is a culmination of 10 years, with the upgrade of 286 properties, the parks and the streetscapes.”
“We formed many partnerships within our community to give people a fresh, updated, pleasant environment to live and play.” The partnerships included BoysTown, which successfully
renovated four units and helped in the restoration of 14 others.
Airdale Primary School helped to beautify the area by painting stobie poles, while John Pirie Secondary School and St Marks College did art projects. Port Pirie Regional Council also had a major involvement with paving and beautification of the areas.
Special guests at the event were Housing SA acting executive director Mychelle Curran, BoysTown chief executive officer Jack Firman and workers, Labor Member for Playford Jack Snelling , Mayor Geoff Brock and Port Pirie Regional Council, along with people living in the area.
The area encompassed The Terrace, Esmond, Anzac and Balmoral Roads, rejuvenating the area.
The houses were renovated as most were unkempt and unsightly, with kitchens and bathrooms being updated and all new exteriors.
The area now boasts a pristine heart in Threadgold Park, where families can bring their children to play and relax in a park scene.
